The Solano Aquatic Sea Otters are thrilled to welcome our new Head Coach-Jorge Fernandez!
Coach Fernandez was born in Santiago, Chile. He is in his 25th year of coaching and is an ASCA level 5. Fernandez first started coaching the Boulder Poseidon Swim Club, while attending the University of Colorado Boulder. After graduating from C.U. in 1988 Fernandez moved to Denver, and became assistant Sr. coach for Mission Aurora Colorado Swimming (MACS). Coach Fernandez was in charge of the dry-land and strength program, backstroke and individual medley swimmers. While with the MACS Swimming Club, Fernandez commuted to Greenwood Athletic Club in order to coach “master’s” swimming. In 1992, Jorge was offered and accepted the Greenwood Tiger Sharks (GTS) Head Coaching position. During Jorge’s 14 year tenure with Greenwood, GTS grew from 20 swimmers to over 200. Coach Fernandez was awarded Colorado Senior coach of the year three times. Coach Fernandez has developed many swimmers that have achieved National Team Status, National Select camps and is on the National Team coaches list.
Fernandez and his coaching staffs have developed and coached numerous National top 16 swimmers, produced numerous state qualifiers, state champions, state record holders. In addition, at the Sectional level, Jorge developed over 100 Sectional qualifiers, 15 champions, 30 Junior National qualifiers and five Junior National Champions. At the senior level, Jorge produced 21 National qualifiers, six Olympic Trial qualifiers, as well as five world class swimmers all whom ranked in the top 100 in the world.
In 2000, Fernandez coached many of the top USA women’s triathletes in swimming. Three of Jorge’s triathletes competed in the Sydney Olympics. As a result of his coaching, Jorge was invited to attend the Olympic Games based on his contributions as their swimming coach.
After 14 years with the Greenwood Tiger Sharks program, Coach Fernandez accepted a new challenge as the head coach the legendary Tacoma Swim Club in the Pacific Northwest. While with the Tacoma Swim Club (TSC), Coach Fernandez had continued success coaching swimmers at the Sr. National, Junior Nationals level. In addition three of Jorge’s atheletes were Sectional champions, and six were Washington State champions. After being at TSC for 2 years, Coach Fernandez returned to Colorado in order to be closer to his family, and father who was gravely ill. In the fall of 2008, Jorge accepted a position as assistant Sr. Coach with Rally Sport Athletic Club in Boulder (RACE) where he coached the distance swimmers. As well as coaching the varsity girls swimming team at Arapahoe High school.
Coach Fernandez has a BA in Spanish and a BS in Kinesiology.
He will join the team April 1, 2010.
