Swim Meet “Tips”

For those of you new to the sport, swim meets can be a bit crazy. Hopefully the following “tips” will help you relax and enjoy the meets!

What to do 48 hours prior to the meet:

  • Rosters of who is swimming in the meet will be posted 48 hours prior to the start of the meet under "line up" in the table to the left.

Make sure your child is included on the roster (in the table to the left).  Communicate with coach Matt (vwcswimcoach@gmail.com) if your child is missing from this list and wants to swim in the meet.

Only swimmers included in the list will be placed in the final line-up which is posted by noon the day of the meet.

What to do the afternoon of the meet:

  • Print your child’s entries from the line up posted in the table to the left which are available by noon the day of the meet.
  • Mark the event, stroke, heat and lane on your child’s arm with a sharpie permanent marker.
(ex. Event 19, fly, Heat 1, Lane 2).
  • Markers will be available at the pool, however, it is easier if you print the line up for your use and mark your child as much as possible in advance.

What to bring to a meet:

  • Sunscreen is a must!
  • Chairs – there is limited seating
  • Shade – umbrellas, hats, etc.
  • Cash for concession purchases – all meets offer concessions which are a significant fundraiser for the home team. Your support is appreciated!
  • In addition to supporting concessions, many families bring their own coolers with food and beverage.

What happens at the meet?

  • Meets begin with a warm-up period for the swimmers. The home team warms up from 4:00-4:25 and the away team warms up from 4:30-4:55.
  • Meets start at 5 pm with the 11-12 and 13-14 individual medleys.  6 and under swimmers race starting at approximately 5:15 for approximately 45 minutes. Older swimmers then continue based on the order of events appearing in the line up sheets.
  • A meet may last until approximately 8:30 pm depending on the number of swimmers participating.

How do the teams earn points?

  • Only heat 1 scores points. Points are awarded as follows:
    • 1st place: 5 points
    • 2nd place:3 points
    • 3rd place:2 points
    • 4th place:1 point

No points are awarded for a disqualification
